The California Department of Justice

Are you looking to make a difference? Do you want to challenge yourself with high-level important work that impacts California citizens and the nation?

Join the State of California’s largest law firm and help administer justice on behalf of 40 million Californians. At the California Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General, you will be a part of a diverse group of over 5,000 professionals whose primary mission is to deliver fairness and equality under the law, through a broad spectrum of programs and services.

Our Health, Education, and Welfare section (HEW) is looking for seasoned litigators (and those desiring to develop litigation skills) to join our team! HEW attorneys represent over 30 state agencies that administer a multitude of state health, education, and welfare programs. Our attorneys routinely practice before state and federal trial and appellate courts.

HEW is a fast-paced litigation section that handles trials, writ proceedings, and complex class actions. Our attorneys handle all phases of litigation in state and federal courts, carry caseloads varied in subject matter and pace, work individually and in teams, and often submit extensive briefing in both trial and appellate courts on issues of first impression. Much of HEW’s casework involves defending against challenges to the Medi-Cal program (e.g., constitutional challenges to reimbursement rates, complex provider audits, and suspensions); the practices and policies of state mental hospitals and developmental centers; statewide educational programs (e.g., monitoring of English Language Learners and audits of public educational funds); and public health issues such as the defense of nursing home citations.

Lateral candidates in the DAG IV and DAG V classifications are strongly encouraged to apply.
