Magdalena Reyes Bordeaux was appointed to serve as bankruptcy judge for the Central District of California, Riverside Division on January 18, 2022. Before her appointment, she was a Supervising Senior Staff Attorney with Public Counsel’s Debtor Assistance Project, where she managed the nation’s largest bankruptcy pro bono project.

She practiced bankruptcy law for over 22 years and served as an appointed member of the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference Executive Committee. She was also an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School and was an Executive Board Member of California Lawyers Association Business Law Section, and a Board Member of the Latina Lawyers Bar Association. She has written numerous articles on bankruptcy issues and was featured on two covers of Los Angeles Lawyer magazine with articles titled “A Fresh Start” (analyzing student loan dischargeability in bankruptcy proceedings) and “Debtors in Pretension” (examining how to expunge a fraudulent bankruptcy from the public record).

She is a frequent speaker at bankruptcy educational panels, and she has received several awards recognizing her work and scholarship in bankruptcy law including the President Emeritus Henry J. Sommer Scholarship Award and the Thomas B. Donovan Public Excellence Award. She is a graduate of UCLA School of Law, where she received her J.D, and UC Irvine., where she received her B.A.
