Gisell Del Carmen
2024 RBG Scholarship Recipient Scholarship Funded in Part by Consumer Attorney Association of Los Angeles (CAALA)
Ms. Del Carmen is entering her third year as an evening student at Southwestern Law School this fall. Being the first college graduate in her family was a big accomplishment for Ms. Del Carmen as she had to overcome significant familial adversity in order to do so.
Prior to deciding to attend law school, her work as a paralegal helped Ms. Del Carmen see firsthand how minority female workers who were undocumented were harassed and belittled. From such experience, Ms. Del Carmen decided to go to law school and focus on labor and immigration rights. Additionally, she used her undergraduate minors in education and labor and workplace studies to volunteer for the R.E.A.C.T. Renuevo Youth Ministries as a youth leader and mentor for high school students and Kids in Need of Legal Defense as a translator. Ms. Del Carmen is also active with the Parents Attending Law Society as she is raising a 2 year old daughter while a law student.
This summer, Ms. Del Carmen is working with an employment law firm and will be assisting them with their expansion into immigration, the two fields she is most passionate about.
After graduation, Ms. Del Carmen plans to work at a non-profit organization that focuses on immigration and labor law.
